A Beginner’s Guide to Roulette

People Playing Roulette In A Casino

Always wanted to play a few spins on the roulette but didn’t know where to start? Well you’re in luck as this handy guide will give you all you need to start having a spin of the wheel.

History of Roulette

When walking into a casino you’re almost always immediately met by a roulette wheel, it’s a casino staple and can be extremely fun to play.

The roulette wheel was created by the French inventor Blaise Pascal in the mid 1600s. Pascal was attempting to create a perpetual motion machine and it is thought he created the roulette wheel much by accident. There are reports of the game being played since at least 1792 in Paris.

The game was virtually unchanged for over a century until in the mid 1800s a wheel was designed with a zero on it, giving the house a much bigger edge.

When the game finally made it to the shores of the United States, a double zero was then added, giving the house an even bigger edge.

Today the game has worldwide fame and is now offered by most online casinos, meaning you can play whenever, wherever you like.

How to Play Roulette

The table consists of a roulette wheel and a green cloth covered table which is the playing surface. Usually when you sit at a roulette table you exchange casino chips for a set of coloured chips, this allows the croupier to differentiate between each player’s bets.

The game begins with each player placing their bets, the croupier will then place the ball in the wheel and state “no more bets”. At this time no more bets can be played in the playing area.

The ball then lands on a number in the roulette wheel and any player with a bet on the selected number or colour will be paid out accordingly.

Types of Bets and Payouts

When playing roulette there are a number of bets available to place. The most common would be colour betting. Here is a breakdown of some of the more popular bets and their payouts:

  • Straight Up – This bet entails betting on any single number 1-36, the payout for this type of bet is 35/1
  • Corner – This bet is placed by placing a chip on the corner in which four numbers meet, meaning if the ball lands on any of these four numbers the player wins. The payout for this bet is 8/1.
  • Column – There are three columns on a roulette table betting on any of them will payout 2:1.
  • Dozen – There are three dozens to bet on when playing roulette: 1-12, 13-24 and 25-36. When betting on dozens the payout is 2/1.
  • Odd/Even – In this bet the player simply places a wager on if the number will be odd or even, the odds for this bet are 1/1.
  • Red/Black – The player places a bet on if the number that the ball lands on will be red or black. The payout is 1/1.
